Both Redding and Phoenix are among the sunniest climates in the U.S. with hot summers with mostly low humidity and snow free winters (for the most part; both have gotten light accumulations on rare occasions). There are definitely some differences as you can see from the data: which do you pick?

Phoenix

or

Redding

I pick Phoenix for the sunnier, warmer winters and those guaranteed episodes of at least a few warm rain/thunderstorms in summer monsoon season.

Redding, for the greater amount of precipitation. The dry season is a bit too dry, but the yearly totals are perfect, surprisingly. My only gripe is the cool summer nights, they could be be 5-10F warmer.

I'm okay with Phoenix, thermally, but it's just too dry to win this battle.

Redding: C-
Too hot but not as hot as Phoenix. Average high needs to be 6°C cooler and average low needs to be 6°C warmer.
Phoenix: D+
Way too freaking hot but not terrible.

wow this is a tough one, at first i thought it was easy, clearly Redding is the most logical choice, more rain while maintaining similar annual sunshine, with the only downside i noticed was the cooler winters than Phoenix and since both places have similar record lows i thought it was worth it.

then i realized the thunderstorm situation. being a thunderstorm buff i'm struggling now which one to choose.

can't handle the pressure, i'm opting out of this vote...

EDIT: alright Redding is the rational choice, even for a thunderstorm fan, because at most we are looking at ~15 t-storms for an average year and its not like Redding is completely devoid of t-storms (probably like 3 or 4 per year). its still not worth going for Phoenix...

The Redding sunshine numbers have been slated as being unsound. Look at older threads.

I love the sun so I love both of these cities and their respective climates. Phoenix has a better winter and Redding a better summer....if I have to pick just based on climate, Redding by a raindrop.

Definitely Redding.

Phoenix is practically almost like hell. The summers look like to torture. Winters are also too hot.

Redding is fine. The winters in Reading look really nice with nice rainy cool winters. The summers maybe too hot and sunny for me. Redding is still tolerable.
