The spring atmosphere is inexorably warming as the sun climbs higher into the sky and days grow longer, but in the Chicago area the forces of warming must do battle with powerful adversaries: the frigid waters of Lake Michigan and the familiar lake breeze, whose effect is to delay the arrival of spring warmth. The delay is greatest near the lake. Within about a mile of the lake, the average date of spring's first 80-degree day is May 4. Two or three miles inland, it's April 24; at five miles and farther inland, the average date is about April 20. Those dates are derived from temperature data observed in the Loop, the University of Chicago, Midway Airport and O'Hare International Airport.
To some extent, it depends on your proximity to Lake Michigan. Chicago always experiences its first 70- and 80-degree temperatures in the spring, but the lake warms slowly and it retains the chill of winter for a long time. It inhibits warm spring weather. In the city's lakefront parks and recreation areas, on average, you can expect the season's first 70-degree day 72 days from now (April 9). About 6 miles inland, the count is 58 days from now (March 26), and 56 days (March 24) about 10 miles inland. Comparable dates for the first occurrence of 80 degrees for the three locations are 100 days (May 7) for the lakefront, 84 days (April 21) a few miles inland and 86 days (April 23), for the most part, farther inland
Usually by mid-March? That seems like a bit of a stretch for Nashville, IMO.....I wonder what the avg first date for 80+ is in Nashville? I would guess early-mid April?
I'm going to say April 7th for Nashville, April 28th for Chicago.

They average 2 days in March 80F or above. But, for the last 30 years, 11 of those years it was April. Roughly 63% of the time during the last 30 years they hit 80F in March.

Average (1981 to 2010) is 22 Mar. Twelve years during that time hit 80F on or before 15 Mar, so it is slightly a stretch.
