Current look at the 850mb temps and 500mb heights. If that Vortex can stay that far south, no question we would have a cold pattern stay in place... but watch what happens...

According to the GFS this is how it will look in 10 days. You can see the orientation of the coldest air not favoring the U.S. In fact, to me areas in white are narrow and pretty much lacking this winter.

I have to look at my files and see if there was a bigger area in the Northern hemisphere of colder than -20C . When there's not a lot to go around, it's hard for any place to get frigid unless your in Canada of course or Alaska... or Asia.. Asia looks like they are having a crazy winter.

Here's February 13, 2015.. You guys tell me.. doesn't it look like there was more coverage of cold last year? Maybe because it was Feb vs Jan.

Spoiler

Set the timelapse camera up!

Hazard outlook from NWS Atlanta

452 PM EST SAT JAN 16 2016

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR PORTIONS OF NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA.

.DAY ONE...TONIGHT...

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR NORTHEAST MOUNTAINS...

LIGHT SNOW WITH A HALF INCH TO UP TO ONE INCH ACCUMULATION FOR
HIGHEST ELEVATIONS OF NORTHEAST MOUNTAINS.

RAIN MIXED WITH SNOW FOR REMAINDER OF NORTH GEORGIA WILL RESULT IN
LITTLE TO NO ACCUMULATION.

DISCUSSION...

AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE OUT OF THE GULF OF MEXICO
TONIGHT AND SPREAD MOISTURE NORTH THROUGH THE AREA. THIS WILL
RESULT IN PRIMARILY LIGHT SNOW OVER THE NORTHEAST GEORGIA
MOUNTAINS THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING. PLEASE SEE THE LATEST WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY FOR THIS AREA FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

ELSEWHERE ACROSS NORTH GEORGIA...ALTHOUGH LIGHT SNOW MAY MIX AT
TIMES WITH THE RAIN...TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN IN THE MID TO
UPPER 30S AND MUCH TOO WARM FOR ANY ACCUMULATION.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY...

THE WINTRY WEATHER WILL CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING FOR THE
NORTHEAST MOUNTAINS. OTHERWISE CLEARING CONDITIONS WILL BE THE
RULE FOR THE AFTERNOON HOURS. TEMPERATURES WILL FALL TO BELOW
FREEZING OVERNIGHT SUNDAY NIGHT WHICH MAY CREATE SOME SLICK SPOTS
FROM THE ATLANTA METRO NORTHWARD BUT PRIMARILY ACROSS THE FAR
NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE.

The Canadian model

Next few days will be proper If we had a little snow pack temps would be even colder.
