Lol, I got that same exact rep comment about freeing Quebec from Canadian colonialism.
I feel closer to Persians than Finns. Ukrainians and southern Russians are from the areas formerly inhabited by Scythians, an Iranian people. The Scythians in Eastern Europe were eventually Slavicized.
Ukrainians are not Finnic and not Iranian. They are Slavic. Period.

Admittedly, it's a somewhat tenuous connection. But the pre-Slavic populations were Iranian. Iranian is a branch of Indo-European, but modern Persians have a lot of additional input that distinguishes them from Europeans. The Scythians in what is now Ukraine were, of course, completely Slavicized.

I am speaking in ethnic, not linguistic terms. Ethnically, there are no pure populations because the groups that spread their languages absorbed other populations into their gene pool.
