Well it looks like we have quite a few years left if you use the same length of years as the previous AMO. I feel better seeing that graphic. We should go to 2030 most likely using the last one as a metric.

More like mid 2020s but yeah we got some time left. By then the PDO might be negative? Plus global warming will have warmed us more? So less harsh winters overall even with negative amo?

Well it looks to me like the last one lasted around 35 years. Adding 35 years to 1998 gets 2033 so you see what I mean. I'd say roughly 2030 even. That is a good 15 years left hopefully. And don't forget the current PDO phase is only in its beginnings lol. They should have years of cold PDO left.

I'm not so sure it will take that long guys.

JC forecast: The AMO seems to be headed for the cool phase, I think we need to start watching for a cool flip around 2020 (I think it is early yet to see a flip). But I am prepared to be surprised.

Even the last warm AMO dipped into cold for a year or two and rebounded. Just look at your graphic as it went neg in the 1940's it seems.

You just never know. But the PDO surely must flip back to cold or that will be the shortest cold PDO ever.

I think depending on how strong La Nina is, it may help push PDO's values down, but both CFS and JAMSTEC have positive PDO for next winter. With the JAMSTECT looking more positive (looking at the waters near the US Pacific coast).
