Yes, the winters are mild for the latitude as with all of Europe, but you have to sacrifice sunshine hours and summer warmth to achieve it which means it has the same faults as the British climate.
2014 broke two sunshine records, 6 in Feb and 5 in Nov. The two gloomiest months ever occurred in the same year.

Some climates can grow both apples and oranges
NYC has rather different from the other climates. I wouldn't think winter defines it anymore than summer does.

It's more of a personal definition. I find that once a winter goes beyond a certain level of cold or cloudiness, that regardless of the rest of the year, then that shapes my overall view of that climate -northern climates.

Would you say NYC is less defined by winter than UK or Paris?

In NZ, I would regard the far south as Northern climates.

Meh. Hard to compare, maybe slightly more. But the summer is more distinctive or defined. I wouldn't think of the UK or Paris as particularly wintry.

NYC is one hardiness zone lower/higher (depends on your preferences) than Turku. Neither one is subtropical, but NYC can grow species we could only dream about.

It's alright, although too cloudy in winter.

Turku is a terrible terrible climate, even the record highs would be crappy averages for most of the year. Even upstate NY is better which says a lot
