Sounds like fun. I was impressed by the hostel prices in Europe, only a bit more expensive than in South America

I would hate hostels tho, I need time alone to recharge. I get where Owen is coming from but yeah no need to book 4/5 star all the time.

I need my alone time too, but depending on the hostel you could have a lot of it. I have met some good friends I still keep in touch with through hostels, never had that happen through a hotel

I do avoid party hostels tho. I'm not much about the party scene, and ironically those types of "super social" hostels tend to be very clique

So at the end of the day, how could you tell the difference? Just by doing research and reading reviews of the hostels?

Don't you think it's a big risk? Sleeping in a room of strangers in a foreign country, thousands of miles away from any help?

I agree, I need my personal space, I would never be comfortable in a hostel environment. I would never even consider staying in a hostel. That being said, spending 500 bucks a night on 5 star hotels is stupid. There are plenty of options in between where you have your own room.

I stayed in some decent hotels that were very cheap when I went travelling, I'd never splash out ridiculous amounts like Owen on overpriced luxury hotels You can get perfectly fine hotels hat are very good for under £50/night and in Europe even cheaper.

I tried hostels a few times and I don't like them. I also like having my own space and it's just awkward trying to stay quiet - not that other people seem to give a sh*t about this - in Vietnam I stayed in one and this girl came back so drunk and hiccuping I thought she was going to throw up all over me.. also it seems to be a hunting ground for hipsters and people who think they're culture kings and queens (despite hanging out in the bar and eating US style food from the hostel bar all day )

I wouldn't personally stay in a hostel, but I can understand why some people like to...

What seems silly to me is to spend a fortune on a hotel, especially as when on holiday you use it as a "base" & only sleep there (well I do anyway). I guess if you were one of these people that travels thousands of miles to spend the entire holiday within your all inclusive hotel, then you may want to spend a bit more, but I cannot understand the mentality of staying in your hotel anyway...
