Fogust: San Francisco shivers through coldest August days in 74 years - SFGate

" The last time San Francisco shivered under an August that stayed so cold was 1942. Franklin D. Roosevelt was president,

This August it never rose above 70 degrees in Downtown San Francisco, and the last time that can be said was 74 years ago.

It was also colder even than July, which averaged 65.2 for the high, and much colder then February, when the average high temperature was a balmy 66.4 degrees "

Did that help?

How cold was the water? Lots of upwelling there can do that to those coastal California climates. They really don't care what the temps higher up in the atmosphere are.

Edit: Also from the article- "Interestingly, looking at the entire summer, San Jose has been right on average, while in the Central Valley, cities were up to 2.5 degrees above normal daily high temperatures this summer."

This SF cold was purely the result of upwelling, I'd imagine.

The summer of 2010 was a great analogue, the deserts had a much hotter than normal summer, while along the coast, it was summer bummer. I spent a week in Oxnard that summer in August, and highs were only between 60-65 the whole time I was there (over 10° below avg), normal August high in coastal SoCal is 76°

San Francisco has the best summer in the contiguous US
Look at how there's no any single cooling degree days, very surprising.

I could see two things causing that:

1. Large ridge in the upper atmosphere.
2. Strong upwelling of cold Pacific Ocean waters.

Like I said before, coastal Cal's weather could really care less what's going on up above, only next door.

I agree. But I have cousins in Marin County several miles inland, and the summers are extremely pleasant there.
