- Which metropolitan area has the best climate in your opinion? Each area is followed by it's mean temperature, Köppen category, rainfall, sunshine hours and rainy days (+1mm). All are yearly averages.
My favorite is Barcelona. This is my rating for each city:
1. Barcelona - B
2. Napoli - B-
3. Madrid - C+
4. Rome - C+
5. Paris - C-
6. Milano - C-
7. London - D+
8. Berlin - D-
8. Manchester - E+
10. Ruhrgebiet - E
I'm probably going with Paris, for the added sunshine and precip vis-à -vis London ( despite the slightly hotter summers than my ideal.... perhaps comparing Heathrow to orly would be a more fair comparison than montsouris in the uhi)... the higher precip of Köln is tempting, but falls are significantly cooler than my ideal. I would probably choose Brussels and Lille (inbetween these cities) though over any of these options (fall is a touch cooler, but precip is better than paris/london), but they are still too gloomy for A/A+s imo. Manchester is pretty decent, but summers are a touch cool for me... Berlin is also too continental and dry.
The southern cities are mehish... Milan is ok but too continental (but mostly the hot summers), Rome and Naples are mediocre but with decent precip. Madrid is too dry and summers are too hot but winters are decent, and Barcelona is the worst amongst this lot for being too hot year round and more arid than the Italian cities.
Limoges is the best climate overall in Europe (and likely the world, since I prefer NW European to PacNW oceanic climates) for me, similar to a wetter version of London. Obviously not a major city though.
Curious why you didn't add Warsaw? It would be a good choice for more continental lovers (too dry and cold for me though)! Hamburg, Lisbon, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Vienma are also good options.
My ranking:
Paris (A- with Orly or Bourget, B+ with Montsouris)- the extra rain and sun wins it out over Heathrow...
London (B+)- too dry, but better temps than the previous 2- A-- if we use Hampstead instead of Heathrow for additional rain, but still too gloomy
Rhein-ruhr (B+)
Manchester (B+)
Berlin(B)
Milan (B/B-)
Rome (B-/C+)
Naples (C+)
Madrid (C+)
Barcelona (C)
For me, this is Napoli (it sounds much better with that name ), slightly better than Rome and Barcelona. The latter mainly falls short due to excessively warm summer nights, whereas coastal Campania has a better balance.
