Rate The Climate: Turpan, China (hot, warm, average, temperatures)

One of the most extreme climates I've found in terms of getting very hot and very cold, yet, it's apparently a large and ( reasonably ) thriving place.

An average July high of nearly 40C, and an average January low of -12C. Really, only March and October strike me as anything close to a spring and fall; this place seem all summer or all winter. ( I'm imagining SophieLL would not enjoy this climate! )

Wow, interesting climate find.

Unfortunately, I give this a D+.

If there was much more annual precipitation, slightly less hot summers, and longer spring/autumn Turpan weather could easily be a B- instead.

Karamay and Urumqi are also similar to Turpan:

2 to 3 million people live in Urumqi and 300,000 live in Karamay other than the 255,000 people that live in Turpan.


There are not that many places in the world that get such warm/hot summers and such cold winter on average for every year as Northwest China it seems like.

However, areas of Midwest USA, Inner West USA, and parts of Russia plenty of years comes close.

Both Urumqi and Karamay are around B-/C+ for me, much better then Turpan

I know I usually give climates with cold winters low ratings, however this is phenomenal with very good summers.

I also give Karamay and Urumqi better grades. I give both of them a C, while I give Turpan a D+.

All three are still similar, but they do have some subtle differences.

Karamay in particular inspired my Fictional Part 2: Apolisfartanago climate for temperatures. However, I created a much wetter version of Karamay.

I agree, it's like a mixture of Winnipeg winters and Phoenix summers
in one city, talk about an extreme climate
