That would have likely been 1980, one of the worst summers for heat for most of the South-central Plains, especially most areas south of I-80.

I was between I-80 and I-70. And then there was the winter the high for the day for a month or so was below 0. I remember waiting for the high to get above 0 before I would change the spark plugs in my pickup that winter. We had it all. I had an older friend who lived through the 1934 heat wave. I heard first hand account of the cattle that died from no water holes to drink from and how people slept on their porches. They moved their beds outside so they could just sleep at night.

High of 73F today, which is what most of the past 3 weeks have been like. Average would be high 70s, so it's been pretty consistently 5F cooler than average. Still no real rain for 5 weeks though.

Only 2.2" total this month so far. We need a stuck cane.

Drought is becoming a problem here in northern AR. We've had .75" in the last 6 weeks. The second rounds of hay aren't growing, animals are suffering, the grass is crispy, and gardens are dying. We have a 50% chance tomorrow night. I hope it sticks and pours on us. Looks like our only chance for at least the next week.

Looks like were getting some rain from the southeast but still humid.

It's interesting to note in the pic above how the rainfall occurred right along I-4 here in Florida.
