Look at the weight of the metal. As in, the ring your guy will make should have a weight in grams -- I'm betting the online one is MUCH lighter. A weightier ring will hold up better and not ding as easily, a lighter weight ring will bend easier because there is technically less metal.

I agree. I bet that the rings are really not identical.

And, if for some reason you have problems with the ring I suspect that you will get much, much better service from the brick & mortar business. You may not even get any help or service at all from the online place.

IMHO, I really doubt if you got "ripped off" by the family friend jeweler.
