The latest figures show a continuation of a long trend of decreasing crime rates locally, statewide and nationally. The total number of major violent and nonviolent crimes in the county dropped from 85,946 in 1990 to 53,165 last year, according to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records.

The Uniform Crime Report shows that crime in Florida has decreased 6.7 percent in the past year and in Palm Beach County has dropped 11.4 percent.

Gov. Rick Scott hailed the figures, saying that the rate is the lowest in 40 years.

Violent crimes statewide - including murder, rape and aggravated assault- were down 10.1 percent and non-violent crimes dropped six percent.

Great news! I've said time and again that per capita, crime TODAY in Palm Beach County (and indeed, Florida) is much much less than the 1980s and 1990s, and even less than the early 2000s. One can merely peruse City-Data's own statistics to see the trends in crime, yet we see countless people coming on this board to decry "how bad crime has become."

I believe "situational bias" and the 24/7 news and internet cycle make us more AWARE of crime. People will often try to downplay crime rate reductions as "non-reporting," or "fraud" by police, but this is actually counter-intuitive, since law enforcement agencies get MORE money when crime is BAD, than when it is good. For example, the police chief/official in Port St. Lucie who literally made up gang statistics to receive federal funding.

Anyway, it's something positive!

Steep drops in crime reported in Palm Beach County, state

That is great news. I was planning on moving back to the area soon so this is great news. Especially that Boynton Beach decrease rate. I was there in 2009 and I really never seen or heard of much crime in the city or where I lived (which was right by the mall).

Definitely great news. Somewhat suprising considering the economic state since 2008.

Only negative is that Rick Scott will be able to use this for his next campaign slogan.
