Hello All,
I am new to this forum, but while lurking I have seen a lot of negativity concerning the S. FL school districts. I am a high school English teacher on Long Island -- sweet deal, I know, but consider the outrageous cost of living here -- and for reasons I'm not going to get into, my boyfriend and I have decided FOR SURE to move to PBC as soon as this summer if we can.
Does anyone have any advice for a teacher-job-seeker? I've got a Master's Degree, 5 years experience in the same school district (a tough one, too), my resume is great, and I interview well. I know that things are not looking good, but it seems FL is experiencing the same problems we are here in NY, yet I know that despite those problems, when I leave, someone will be hired to replace me. Honestly now, is there hope or should I look into another field? (I am willing to do this if I have to). If so, where should I look??? What fields are good there right now?
Pardon my rambling and any typos -- I'm in class right now with the kids taking a test and I have one eye on them and one eye on the monitor.
Thanks in advance for any help!

The kids are taking a test and this teacher is online.

"my resume is great, and I interview well"

To bad you have no work ethic.

"I have seen a lot of negativity concerning the S. FL school districts".

Well part of the reason may be due to teacher like you...get back to your class and post this stuff when the tax payers are NOT paying your salary.

Gee wiz

This really rubbed me the wrong way, considering the taxes we pay for the schools this is what we get for our money.

LOL I KNOW. She'll fit in GREAT down here.

I was at a job interview friday and the interviewer interrupted me mid answer and took a personal call. Started tearing up on some high drama call with her DH. Then she stopped for awhile to do emails and check her work stats on her screen. And it was a TESTING interview at that!

MegDrew stay out in Long Island. At least the parents there are assertive enough to chew you out for being only half engaged. Down here they're too LAID BACK.

Well, I'm sorry to have offended. I'm sure none of you ever check your e-mail at work.
Of course I have a good work ethic. It is not easy to get and retain a teaching job on Long Island. I worked very hard to get to that point and I still work hard because I'm invested in my career and the kids.
The kids were bent over their papers writing essays, fully engaged if you must know. When kids take regular (not standardized or state) exams, teachers are always otherwise occupied. In this case I simply took a break from grading papers to check in on this forum.
Anyway, when I said I had heard negative things about the schools, I was not referring to the teachers or the kids, but employment opportunities. Are there really hiring freezes, layoffs, etc.? What subject areas need teachers the most? Can someone who can answer this question seriously without biting my head off please be of assistance? Thank you so much.

"To bad you have no work ethic" -- That should be "too."

Ok, I won't comment on you surfing the internet during your work hours.
Yes, there are layoffs and hiring freezes. I am in NE FL, and every school in my county is surplussing teachers. (That means that they have a job, just not at their present school. Since all schools have teachers they are designated as "surplussed", I have no idea what school they will be able to move to within our district. I imagine they are going to actually lose their job.)
I believe that the areas where there actually may be openings will be math and science.
It looks very bleak for public education in the next year. I'm just glad I have 17 years seniority in my district.
Good luck if you decide to move to this state.

Thank You, JagFan. I wish you had better news, but I was expecting to hear this. I will just try to keep my chin up and perhaps look into temporarily doing something else or teaching at a private school (although I'm sure parents are pulling their kids out due to the high tuitions, so that might be a no-go).
Should your school calendar be similar to that of my district's, I wish you a happy upcoming Spring Break!
(Oh, and for the record, I wasn't surfing. I logged directly onto this site and posted; it took me no more than 5 minutes [hence the poorly written post]. Sorry, I just feel the need to defend myself. The above attacks from people who have no idea how hard I do work really rattled me ... and, to be embarrassingly honest, sort of hurt my feelings )

My husband switched careers and became a teacher two years ago. I am afraid he will be laid off. So far, he's been told that he still has a position at his present school, but no one really knows how much money the state is going to give to the schools. We probably won't know until July. All I know is our principals are under so much stress trying to meet the budget that the district presents every other day.
Just a word of advice: Next time don't announce on a mesage board that you are doing work of a personal nature when you are supposed to be supervising your students. It makes the profession look badly and gives the public ammunition to attack teachers.

I really wasn't expecting anyone to be phased. In fact, I was quite taken aback by those replies. I added that as a side note to explain why my post was poorly written (classic English teacher behavior) -- because I was supervising my students. I guess it came off sounding otherwise. I apologize to any fellow teachers for inadvertantly making us seem like a waste of tax dollars.

I had forgotten that people are looking for as much ammo against teachers as possible. I've seen so much teacher bashing over the past month (particularly in the local paper on Long Island because our taxes are so high), it is enough to make me almost afraid to admit that I am part of a profession that so recently was regarded as noble. I guess I was naively hoping that the teacher-hating wasn't going on everywhere!

Anyway, back to the topic at hand! From now on I will cease to defend myself because that's not what I came here for!
We are having similar budget problems in NY. Some of the non-tenureds are pretty scared. I am going to do some more research. I'm sure I'll have more questions, but I'll probably start a new thread for those.
I hope things work out for your husband and, again, thank you for your helpful reply.

Meg,
First, welcome to the forum.
I think some here were a bit too harsh on you, especially being a new poster.
I too am a civil servant, a professional firefighter, and you would not believe some of the abuse we get.

I hope you stick around and that you get the info you want here.

Frank D.

What a rude and nasty post. Isn't this a personal attack, against the TOS?
