i know the job market is bad right now, but i didn't realize it was THIS bad. every job i find is only paying about $9-10/hour. WHAT? that's crazy to me. no way i can take that big of a pay cut and afford to move down there. i'm getting so very discouraged

Your frustration is understandable. I have been out of work for seven months now. I applied for a job last week, first day anyone knew about it, they already had 16 applications.

It is not confined to South Florida, my son is a Firefighter / Paramedic in OH. They are laying off Firefighters and Police Officers. The cities don't have the tax base to support their budget. Too many empty houses. I would have never believed that a Firefighter of with 14 years seniority would have to worry about loosing his job.

Good luck with your job search.

You won't find much being out of state. The good jobs are taken very quickly by locals as Reed mentioned.
It's a tough economy everywhere, be prepared to hold down a couple jobs until you land the right one. Have you ever worked the restaurant business? Great way to supplement your income and there's a ton of restaurants down here. Although season is ending pretty quick and they usually don't hire too much for offseason...
For us we knew it would take awhile to get going, but couldn't take another winter of snow and freezing temps. Might want to ride the summer out and then head down after you've saved a bit.

And it's not uncommon to see people who once made 3 or 5 times that applying in droves for these jobs. Employers know it's their market, they can pay less knowing the job market is tight.

Why do you need someone else to hire you? Use what skills you have and start a business!

Let me guess one of those pyramid schemes, Arbonne, Amway or something else. Plenty get rich quick schemes here, work from home and make $10K/month. Fools rush in where angels fear to travel....

You need to get creative. If you don't have the time to start a new business, you CAN find legitimate work-at-home jobs online. My friend works for HSN from home. She originally scoffed at the idea of working 'customer service' but after being laid off from her professional job, she jumped at the chance. She doesn't make nearly as much as she did in healthcare but it pays the rent. She brings in about $800 every 2 weeks.
