I am driving from NC to Wheeling, WV (Oct 9th weekend) and was wondering if there are any good scenic drives for fall colors in the path. I can take detours on my route if scenic drives are 1-2 hrs from route I-77.
I am new to the area and do not have sufficient information regarding where to check out good fall colors. Any suggestions and help is appreciated.
When you get to Beckley, instead of continuing on the Turnpike to Charleston, take the exit for Rte 19 North. It's the first exit beyond Tamarack (which you should visit, BTW). Follow 119 North through Fayetteville (stop at the New River Falls Bridge), Summersville [1], and on north until you hit I-79. Take I-79 North.
Once you're on I-79 North, I'll give you two alternatives to get to Wheeling. (1) At Clarksburg, exit on to WV Route 20, take 20 North to New Martinsville, then WV Route 2 north to Wheeling. (2) Stay on I-79 North into Pennsylvania until you reach I-70 at Washington, PA. Follow I-70 West to Wheeling.
[1] Strictly adhere to the posted speed limits along US-19, especially in Fayetteville and Summersville.
I may not have much color around my place this year. The leaves have been dropping from the poplar trees since early Sept., due to the drought I suppose. The tulip poplars normally turn a bright yellow, but mine are almost bare already.

I would follow the advice given of taking US 19 watching for the speed traps, then I79 North until you get to Fairmont. There take an exit that takes you downtown and find Route US 250. Take US 250 to Wheeling. It is a windy, two lane road through beautiful hill country and if the leaves have changed, the drive would be beautiful.
