WV is miserable because we make ourselves out to be miserable. People often sit on their "pity-pot" and do not do anything to change their circumstances. If people would realize that 95% of their problems are self generated, then they would probably have a better perspective of WV. We have beautiful scenery, abundant resources, fairly decent roads, and friendly/caring people.

I absolutely agree with you here (except for the roads part... ours are the worst in the country IMO), but will point out that here in Morgantown we are not miserable. In fact, most of us are very happy with our circumstances. The pity-pot doesn't extend this far north. I believe that the pity-pot folks keep themselves in that situation by having developed a mass entitlement mindset, which inhibits well being in the long run and leads to perpetual discontent. Pity-potters are always measuring themselves up against non pity-potters and finding themselves coming up short. How could anybody be happy in a situation like that?

My daughter and her family live there, and they are happy.

A lot of these rankings are based on statistical measures like health, income, etc and they haven't actually come here ans asked us if we are happy or not. Also, income may be lower here but so is cost of living. At least here most people can live in a single family home which is increasingly no longer the case in states like California and New Jersey.

I have been all over the country and the state with the most visibly miserable and unhappy people is New Jersey. And Californians actually didn't seem that happy either. The Hollywood and beach scene that you see in all the movies and TV shows are a very small fraction of what California is like. And even that scene is highly exaggerated in popular culture.

Those in Morgantown are pretty big homers but I'm not going to complain when someone is happy where they are at. I'm glad for them.

LOL ... Okay, ... we're happy homers. There is a reason we're happy. This is a great place to live, and many seem to agree with us about that. It isn't perfect... we have growing pains with infrastructure limitations and the like, but that is a lot better than the alternative... having plenty of infrastructure and fewer and fewer people to use it.
