Hi All! Since moving to Charles Town we've noticed that our water bill seems really high. It's between $150-170 each month. We're a family of 5. I called and the nice lady that answered the phone said that does seem high but couldn't give me any further assistance. Anyone else feel like they have higher water bills since moving here?
When I lived in Ranson the water bill was $86 a month. Even if I never used a drop of water, that was the base amount I was charged.
It was my understanding that Jefferson Utilities was distributing the cost of providing service to customers that lived on the mountain across their subscribers or something like that.
Here in Leesburg- I receive a waterbill every three months and it isn't as crazy as it was in Jefferson county.
i recently moved from fairfax county in Northern Virginia. My water bill here is three or four times higher what it was in Northern Virginia. My bill for two people was never higher than $40 and it was not billed every month. Since moving to West Virginia on my bill for just me has been $50 every month and I thought that was very high now I know that it's not just me. Northern Virginia is one of the most expensive places in the country so I find it surprising that things like utilities and gas costs more here. Crazy
Have you considered that you might have a leak somewhere in your water system? Since this seems to be a problem happening to several people it might just be that Jefferson County has high water costs, but I've known people who have had to have repairs done to their water system due to leaks between the actual water supply and it making it to faucets in the house. Might be worth checking into, just in case.

Another idea- tip off the investigative teams on Channel 7 WJLA, Channel 9 WUSA, Channel 4 WRC or Channel 5 WTTG and let them investigate it to see if it is a possible scam.

It might be because in NoVA many of the water systems are older and have been paid off, or were much cheaper to construct. Many areas of WVA have newer systems with higher costs of construction.
Also, you can't go by dollar amount for water/sewer, you have to look at usage. A family of 4 will use roughly 250 gallons/day (that's the number used when sizing a system for construction).

All valid points. The house is three years old but it's possible there could be a leak. I would have to compare my old bills for the gallons but I highly doubt I'm using more water by myself than when it was me and my ex. That's less laundry, less showers, etc. I haven't changed habits that could justify that I'm using that many more gallons than I was before. My current boyfriend now warned me not to get natural gas because gas was higher in WV than in VA. I think it just might be the case that utilities cost more here. Gasoline for cars also costs more in Jefferson county than in either fairfax or Loudon county so it's definitely not far fetched.

Gas costs more in WV than VA because of the gas taxes we have. Utilities including natural gas in WV are in general cheaper than VA with the exception being in the eastern panhandle
