Where in Manhattan do you need to go? It makes all the difference...
Sure, to midtown, most places in Southern Westchester will fit the bill if you live close to a train station (think south of 287). If you need to get downtown though 45 minutes door-to-door is going to be close even if you're in the southern most part of the county (Pelham, Bronxville, Mt. Vernon etc) simply because of the subway.
7 minute walk to the train
The 7:38am or 8:01am trains take 33 minutes to get to Grand Central. There are other trains before, in between, and after, but they generally make at least one more stop.
If she means downtown as in Lower Manhattan, there is no way to do it in under 45 minutes taking mass transit.
I used to make it from Irvington to downtown in 35-40 minutes by car, but I left about 6 AM. Homeward bound was roughly double the time.
