Hi -- I'm currently living in DC but will be moving up to NY in the near-ish future. I'll be working in Midtown (near GCT) and am hoping to be able to buy something that affords me a relatively easy commute via Metro North. I'm somewhat familiar with Westchester but more the northern part of the county and need some assistance in identifying areas to start to narrow my search (preferably no further north than White Plains).

Thanks!!

Here is a map of the Metro-North system: MNR Connecting Service

Express stations offer more trains than local stations (and the trains bypass stations further south, getting you home even faster), so you may want to try the following towns:
White Plains
North White Plains
New Rochelle
Tarrytown
Yonkers
Rye

My husband and I both work in midtown near GC and we are also looking at houses in Westchester. We are looking at Pelham (28 min to GC), Larchmont (33 min) and Mamaroneck (36 min). These towns are all smaller with a nice, walkable downtown areas. The ones listed in the response above are much larger. Other towns that are a quick train ride to Midtown are Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Bronxville and Eastchester.

How about a little more info? Budget, lifestyle, family situation, school needs if any, etc? The answers you'll get can only be as good as the questions.

Pelham is very convenient. 28-30 minutes ordinarily by train. If you have to work late, and have to take a local, it's still just about 28-30 minutes; whereas White Plains, Harrison, Rye, etc. would take significantly longer.

It's also convenient if you drive. It's located right at the crossing of the Hutch and Cross County, and the NE Thruway also has an exit.

Also, Pelham Manor is walkable distance from the 5 train stop at Dyre Ave. Worst case scenario.

Pelham's school district is very well regarded, and the town has many attractive, yet affordable houses for reasonable prices. Downtown is small, but it is easy to get to other towns like Bronxville, Larchmont, and City Island. The big downside is the property taxes, which are almost comically high.

I work near GC and live in Hartsdale. The express trains will put you in Grand Central in 35 minutes. See my other posts for general facts on Hartsdale, DM me if you need additional info. Good luck.

I drive 2 miles to the White Plains station, take an express to GCT, and walk from GCT to 55th and Lex. The train ride takes 33 minutes. Door to door takes me 65 minutes, and I'm not waiting more than 5 minutes for a train. The driving, parking, waiting, walking ends up taking me just as long as the train ride. I'm basing this on 7 years of daily commuting. Just something to keep in mind.
