Though I haven't read the board, I do have a couple of friends who live in Nassau county and they rant about the taxes.
FYI: investment bankers and mansion dwellers in Westchester are CRYING THEMSELVES A RIVER over property taxes too and plotting against their local teachers' union because of it. How do I know that? I read it in the NY Times:
Some residents argue that the town should be more businesslike, cutting other costs to offset the outlay for smaller classes. Peter P. Pulkkinen is one. A 40-year-old investment banker, he and his wife, Sarah, moved here in 2004 from the Upper East Side and their two oldest children are now in the first and third grades. He wants small classes for them. But rather than raise taxes, he would restrict teacher compensation— particularly their benefits. ... “I think it is a false paradigm to have to choose between radically diminished services or exponentially higher taxes,” he said, “without first addressing the structural issue of teacher compensation.” ... One hour a week of Spanish instruction to grade-school students, for example, was eliminated last year. Mr. Pulkkinen instead would attack “structural” expenses like tenure, the accumulation of unused sick days and the rising amount the school board pays for pensions and health insurance.
That reasoning resonates with David A. McBride, 75, who for 40 years has lived in a white colonial mansion with an imposing front entrance. ... He doesn’t fault Mayor Marvin or Dr. Quattrone who, in his view, have managed costs well. Instead, like Mr. Pulkkinen, Mr. McBride directs his ire at teacher compensation and at the teachers’ union, the Bronxville Teachers’ Association. ... “We outsourced the custodians last year and the teachers initially rebelled; that to me was inexcusable,” he said. “In private industry it could not have happened. When the boss says, ‘I have to have X amount of savings out of your division,’ you don’t say no.”
It's not just us Long Islanders ranting. Looks like the "wealthy Westchesterites" are not too holier than thou to rant about property taxes either.
eh, i really don;t want to get into fighting online, not my thing. i should be smart enough to know wising off to my friends about something we have been going back on forth forever does not translate into wising off online.
but pequaman, you have presented an opportunity for me to ask a question. i used to date a girl from farmingdale, but her mom used to tell her to tell people she was from masepequa park. this never made sense to me, is farmindale something to be ashamed of?
hmm, I wouldn't say it's anything to be ashamed of. Farmingdale Village/East Farmingdale may have a few seedy sections, some minor gang issues, but it sounds like she was in South Farmingdale/Mass Park area? Part of Massapequa Park (north section) goes to Farmingdale Schools, that might be why. So she could have been in the Village of Mass Park, but Farmingdale SD. That could be the only way she was "in" both villages/hamlets because I don't think any of Mass Park is in the Farmingdale Zip code.

Oh, I don't dispute that people in Westchester have high taxes. And yes, I'm one of them that cries it's high.
What I often hear from my LI friends is that what they pay v/s what they get out of the government (local city/township) is a stark contrast to what we pay and get back. I live in Pleasantville and I am very pleased with what I get back from my government services. I can't site specifics because we never got into that much detail.

It's good to hear that you are happy with the way your tax money is being spent. It looks like those in Bronxville are not anywhere near as happy as you are! Just like there are some people in Nassau that are not as unhappy as your friends, everybody's got a different story, so stereotyping each other (LI vs. Westchester) doesn't help!
Westchester has some good, informative threads, but Long Island's forum is at least 50 percent rants about taxes and government? It seems like the two counties are similar in so many ways and definitely similar regarding the taxes you pay. Why is there so much less whining about taxes on the Westchester forum? Are people more wealthy in Westchester?
Take a look at the NY Times story in post #21, which examined Bronxville's opposition to "sky's the limit" rises in property taxes and quoted an investment banker and a "man who has lived in a mansion for 40 years" ... both quotes complaining about property taxes and suggesting solutions such as cutting teacher salaries and benefits. I think "whoever is wealthier does less complaining" is an incorrect assumption.

Median Household Income & even Median Worker income is much more accurate than per capita. The reason is per capita takes into account ALL the people living in an area. That means retirees, children, maids, etc... It's not meaningless but many variables can skew the number. Because LI has larger household/family sizes, likely more poor pockets (but more ultra-wealthy areas), and more retirees will produce a distorted/irrelevant per capita figure. For instance, take Sagaponack, NY. The per capita is only $56,000 yet this is one of the wealthiest areas in the world w/homes valued at a median of $1+ million dollars (like $2-3M median). Many more examples like this on LI... You get the idea.
