Hello everyone. I am going to be driving up to Cornell soon from Long Island. Do you think I could shave any time off the trip by taking the 87 up to the 287 and crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge instead of the GW Bridge? Is the traffic up there any better? My experiences with the GW Bridge have been abysmal.

Thanks!

Yes - you will probably do better in terms of traffic and time if you take the TZB. You'll pay a small toll shortly after Yonkers on 87 N and then $1.25 in Harriman when you get on 17 W. 17 W through Orange County and then deep into the Upstate is toll-free.

If it's rush hour I'd avoid both by heading up I684 then I84 west over Newburgh Bridge to Rt 17. It might be a few miles longer but you'll be able to cruise at 75 mph or more until you hit 17.

Never ever ever take the GW Bridge. Ever.

Never ever ever drive on the Cross Bronx. Ever.

Those are our rules, based on a couple of horrendous experiences. We have learned our lesson. I would 100% take the TZ. Even when it's bad it's not AS bad as the GW.

Definitely the Tappan Zee out of the two, unless you are leaving at an off hour and know that there is no scheduled roadwork on the GWB; otherwise, it's an exercise in frustration.

Some prefer 81 to 17. For 17 you'd better have your cruise control set at 58. Muy mucho polizia.

I've traveled 17 tons of times from Binghamton to Middletown and have it set at 73 or 74. Never been bothered. Its a 65 in Broome and Sullivan and a 55 in Greene. Not too many cops in any of those counties.

I would take the TZB. It's cheaper than the GW (TZB is $5) and the traffic is much less.

Take the TZB to Harriman then 17 west. I've been from NYC to Troy NY and never had any issues except hard rain. There are so many cars during peak hours but traffic still moves at about 65mph. Stay away from the CrossBronx to George Washington Bridge unless your traveling at 3:00am, it's very congested often.
