If you plan on renting a 3/4 bedroom house figure it will cost a minimum of ~$3500-$4500/month. If you plan on buying a house, that's a whole other conversation and a million factors will come in to play to determine price. If you're going to rent a 1/2 bedroom apartment figure it will cost ~$1750-$2500/month. You'll need a car. For simplicity's sakes figure out what you need salary-wise to make the above housing expenses work if all other expenses remain constant. Then add $5000 or so for increased cost of living. This is not a real formula...just my opinion.

Look on line there are sites that allow you to compare one locale to another. I tried Cost of Living Calculator: Compare the Cost of Living in Two Cities - CNNMoney , they didn't have Putnam/Westchester but I used Nassau County and you should make 116K to compare to Miami/Dade. These apps give you a ball park idea.
