I just accepted a job offer in Stamford, CT and am considering my living options, including Westchester County, NY. What I would like to know, however, is the following:
Does Westchester County (or NY state) impose a property tax on vehicles owned? If so, how much?
Connecticut does this (albeit at the city/town level). Every year I have to pay about $300-$400 in property tax on my car.
Also, if I live in Westchester and work in CT, I would pay state income tax to CT. Then, on the NY tax return, I would take a credit for the taxes paid in CT and simply pay the incremental amount of NY state income tax in excess over what I paid to CT. Correct?
Really? I find that hard to believe. I thought Westchester was the epitome of taxes. No motor vehicle property tax?? Wow.
Believe it. I'll rephrase in case it wasn't clear. I know how it works because my wife is employed in CT but we live in NY. It isn't some kind of dodge, that's just how it works. The NY rate is a higher than CT so she withholds at the NY rate. The point is, there isn't double taxation.
