Hi ... really trying to get a feel for White Plains because I’m so many ways, it seems to fit the needs for my family of four (10th grader and 8th grader)(diversity, good schools, good commute, progressive). We currently live in the Midwest, so can’t easily visit - but we are highly likely having to relocate. But one factor gives me pause: it seems like a lot of people feel that White Plains lacks personality, that it’s filled with malls and chain clothing stores and restaurants. One person said that the downtown lacks “soul?” I’m getting the impression from these boards that there isn’t an artsy, laid back cafe or local music culture. I’m also trying to get a sense of neighborhoods - do they have neighborhood (not downtown) restaurants? Cafes? Coffee shops? Or is it all on Mamaroneck Ave or Main Street?

Am I off base?

Rebecca

Where are you coming from? I'm only asking in terms of possibly getting a relative comparison.

An artsy college town in Montana ... Missoula, Montana. But I lived in NYC and SF for over 20 combined years, so that frames my urban experience ...

So, are you looking for something similar to Missoula or do you have something else in mind for the type of neighborhood you are looking for?

As I wrote above, it seems like a lot of people feel that White Plains lacks personality, that it’s filled with malls and chain clothing stores and restaurants. If you want artsy and Westchester, it looks like the River Towns are the way to go. Hudson River Towns In Westchester | Historic Hudson River Towns

With that said, here is some information from White Plains that you may be interested in: White Plains, NY - Official Website - Arts & Culture Organizations

Definitely second the recommendation to check out the river towns (particularly Tarrytown) or even Nyack across the river to get what you are describing, as I don't think White Plains is it.
