True, there's always a tradeoff between taxes and commute time. We looked at some really nice places near Stamford but ultimately passed due to the long commute times and relatively crowded situation at the train/I95 corridor.

Agreed, we considered Greenwich, Darien & Westport but the commute would have been too long. I think it's doable if you live near Grand Central. If you work in downtown Manhattan, or anywhere with another 30+ minute subway ride, the commute it too long.

As others have stated, it is important to know where in Manhattan and Brooklyn you would be traveling to. The West Side of Manhattan can easily add 15 mins or more from a commute to Grand Central station.

Pelham could be a possibility. Walkable, with eateries next to the train station. Fairly decent taxes (considering it is Westchester). You'll be in close proximity to a variety of highways including the Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson.

You do realize that the train time from Greenwich is shorter than some of the towns mentioned in the OP’s original post? Greenwich is under an hour train ride while Katonah is over an hour. Pleasantville and Chappaqua are not that much shorter. That is why I suggested it. Darien is only a few minutes longer, so few literally a couple minutes a day, the OP can save a good amount of money. Jay

I realize that. That’s why I suggested CT to the OP in my earlier post.

You quoted a post where I stated why I didn’t choose CT. I also never considered anywhere in Northern Westchester.

What about Tuckahoe(Tuckahoe Schools, which seems to be a good and culturally diverse SD)?

Sorry but it’s hard to keep track of who recommends what over the course of the thread. As I said, the OP was considering Westchester towns that are further out so why not consider Greenwich? It’s just as close as thevtowns they mentioned. Jay

No worries, I agree that CT towns are worth looking into for the OP.

Why not areas in NJ and Long Island also?? This is the Westchester forum. If someone wants recommendations for CT they can ask for it in the CT forum.

I'd recommend White Plains. The areas that border Scarsdale and the western fringes are more exclusive and in the $850K-1 Mill price range (larger homes, larger lots), have slightly lower taxes (relative to towns further south in Westchester because of the huge retail tax base) and if you're in those areas, you will have to drive and park by the train (as you wished, though there are plenty of smaller homes on smaller lots closer to the train station within walking distance).

White Plains has the most frequent service train to Manhattan in ALL of Westchester (at subway-like frequency 'round the clock 4:30 AM - 1:30 AM - between 5 to 9 trains an hour), plus you have access to the Downtown which is like a Mini-Manhattan and close to 24 hrs (20 hours - i.e. Target, Shop Rite) with Big Box stores and amenities you won't find unless you go to Manhattan. The Express Train (which runs frequently, at least 5x/hour on the weekdays and twice an hour on the weekends in addition to two more local trains an hour) is literally ONE stop away from Manhattan (25 min to Harlem-125th, 35 min to Grand Central). It can't be beat.
