I'm researching places to retire in a year or two. I saw a website on Memaroneck Towers, 233 Halstead Ave., right across the street from the Metro North Railroad station. Is anyone familiar with this developmen and area? Is it a fairly walkable and safe area for someone who doesn't drive?
It is pretty nice, but I think that the Avalon development in Harrison is more appealing, since there is a nice grocery store within walking distance and downtown Harrison is also nice. Mamaroneck has the harbor, which is quite nice, but day to day Harrison seems a little nicer for someone with no car.
I recommend the town of Mamaroneck, and I’ll explain why.
The first thing to know about Harrison is that the Avalon is there, and it’s in Mamaroneck as well.
I recommend Mamaroneck because there is simply more to offer. Mamaroneck has more sidewalks, more shopping downtown, and more events to feel like you fit in with the community.
Mamaroneck has fireworks on the 4th of July, the Fireman’s Carnival which is held around the Harbor Park (Route 1 and Mamaroneck Avenue.)
While Harrison is close to Rye, which has Rye Playland, you can walk along the waterfront.
However, you might have to be a resident of Rye in order to park there.
I recommend The Avalon in Mamaroneck. You get a covered parking garage which is surrounded by a gate. I knew people who lived there decades ago. Back then, they had a gym/exercise facility, a pool (outdoors for warm weather), a lounge where you can relax and socialize with other members and guests.
Also, if you live in The Avalon in Mamaroneck, you are walking distance from gas stations, grocery stores, and pharmacies.
Mamaroneck and Harrison are good towns to get a typical suburban town experience. You should walk around during the daytime to experience what I am discussing here.
