i am starting work in a couple months in new rochelle & i was wondering if anyone can give any advice on what areas are the best for a young 23 year old to live in.. i would like to live close to work, but also close enough to the city to experience it & be able to get there fast & easily. i would like to rent a small apt for less than $2000/month. what areas are close to manhattan & new rochelle that are still safe & easily commutable. thanks!

Pelham, Larchmont, and Bronxville are close and an easy commute to both New Rochelle and NYC. I am assuming, of course, that you would be driving to New Rochelle and taking the train to the city. The trade-off is that there is not much night life in these areas. If that's what you seek, you might want to consider White Plains, though parts of it are not as secure as Pelham, Larchmont, or Bronxville. These areas are very popular with families, as is much of Westchester, though there are some singles around, but that's why you're going to have to commute to NYC for night life for a single in their 20s. White Plains does have some night life, too.
You should not have a problem finding an apartment for that housing budget. To follow BMWGuydy: There are currently 69 1 to 2 bedroom apartments between $1,000 and $2,000 per month in the Larchmont, Pelham, and Bronxville area.

Plan on spending a few days checking out the different areas to see where they are in relation to your job and night life.
Parts may be worse than others, but it is NOT as unsafe as ppl make it out to be... I live there now.
I think if I were single, I'd want to be as close by as I could get to there. The train is a 30 min ride to the heart of NYC. Mamaroneck ave has many bars/restaurants/nightlife/movies/malls. You could either go to NYC, or stay in the area.
The other areas mentioned are also nice, but there is not as much to do. I think of families & babies when I hear of them.
I'm not sure about New Rochelle itself.
