Dobbs Ferry is on our list of places to research as possiblities for a move this fall, but we've yet to go visit. I would love to hear from people who are familiar with the area about what it's like there. We'll be commuting into the city, have a two-year-old, and will most likely rent for the first year or two.
It's a nice area. The river towns, including Dobbs Ferry, have a reputation of being a bit less pretentious than the rest of Westchester. Dobbs Ferry schools are rated fairly well, but a step behind the more elite schools. The community has a bit more diversity than you see in some other Westchester towns. It's a very reasonable commute into the city.
Really, you should just take a weekend and check it out for yourself.
Dobbs Ferry is a nice town with a cute village, friendly people and a beautiful park by the water. It also has excellent schools and its own train station (big plus). Commute to Manhattan by Metro North is about 35 minutes. I think its a hidden gem . Definitely check it out - you won't be disappointed!
I would also suggest Hastings-on-Hudson and just a little further north of Dobbs Ferry, Sleepy Hollow.
SH has friendly faces, nice community feel with community activities for the kids, its own little theater and the schools are bad. It does have a high immigrant population and along the main street of Beekman Avenue and its side streets, you will find that most, if not all, homes have been converted into multiplate family homes. It has its own train station or you could use the bigger station in Tarrytown. A lovely waterfront park, Kingsland Point with public kayaking available and the lighthouse tour with a nice view of the TZ.
