I am traveling from Conn. on Saturday on to NJ pike. Mapquest always puts you through Cross Bronx Expwy / and GW Bridge which I hate. I know there is a better less stressful way. Tapenzee?? Merritt Parkway?? Can anyone please give me directions. We are traveling past the pike on to Virginia Beach. I've gone this way before but always fine it so crazy trying to read all the signs. Upside is the traffic is usually slow enough so I don't fee too rushed!! Thanks.

The sad fact is that there is no "good" way to go! It's all about timing, but either the Tappan Zee or the GW will still be the best bet. If you are coming through early, I'd grit my teeth and do the GW. A trickier route would be to come down 95, follow signs for the Triboro, take the Harlem River Drive to the GW... but then you're paying for two bridges and there are several potential spots for 'complications.' Get up and get through early!

When you reach NY follow sign to the Triborough Bridge via the Bruckner Expwy but don't get on Triborough. When you get near the Triborough you'll see signs for the Major Deegan Expwy north(87). Take that north, you'll pass yankee stadium on your right and you'll then see signs to get back on 95s, the cross bronx Expressway, but by that time you are just about to cross into Manhattan and have missed the bulk of the Bronx traffic. The entance is usually crowded but it will move. I have worked in the Bronx for years and I never take the Cross Bronx. The route I gave you basically swings you around the bottom of the Bronx. Miles wise it is a few longer, but traffic wise it almost always beats the Cross Bronx.
