If I had waited a couple of hours the ice would have been off the roads and I would have been fine. Chains actually were not in order for those roads. I was just out too early. Snow normally doesn't bother me either and I've slid down my share of roads but this was a little longer slide than my stomach could take!

^ Hehe, yeah man these steep roads around here make any sort of snowfall or ice formation very dangerous. I take pride in my winter driving skills, but there are some places I just won't go!

This is partly a common misconception. See, in order to see any days with no sun, you have to live very far north in Alaska. Here is a chart, taken from this website showing the average daylight hours in different towns and villages in Alaska. Get out your map and check it out, it's interesting.

As you can see, places like Barrow and Prudhoe Bay, which are on the northern tip of Alaska, on the shores on the Arctic Ocean, have zero daylight hours for a couple months. December and January are the darkest months. But most places in Southcentral don't go down below 5 hours, and even that is only for a couple months. It's really not bad at all. And then in the summer, you have the midnight sun! Now that's how you have 24-hour fun!
