I need a carpenter or someone else capable of replacing some sil plate and band board. Someone insured. Any ideas?

Your area is pretty important to know.

When you talk to someone about the work, ask for references - then CALL THEM! Everyone goes on about needing a licensed contractor or being a member of the BBB. These things do not gaurantee quality and if your job is under $40,000 is doesn't even require a licensed contractor in NC. Getting and CALLING references is the only way to know what kind of work a person does.

oh yeah in haywood county.

its actually anything over 30 that requires license. More worried about a liability policy. The license does give you a safety net in that the board has funds for people screwed by licensed contractors and you have a foot to stand on legally. But thats not really the point.

Just want some referrals

My mistake. You are right, it is $30,000. Even with having a license it's still not a gaurantee of quality and having a board to go to with complaints is little comfort when something goes wrong. My beef is always that many people ONLY ask about licenses and BBB membership and never consider calling references. I'm guilty of it too. We once hired a licensed plumber for a house we were building. He did a horrible job and caused a lot of damage. Come to find out, the people we were renting from while we were building had had the same problems with the same plumber! People just don't talk enough anymore!
