My husband and I are wanting to move south and put the cold northeast winters behind us. I would still like to live someplace that has seasons and beautiful scenery. We currently live in Maine and I have lived here my entire life. My husband is originally from South Carolina. We visited the Asheville area a couple of years ago and loved it. What areas around Asheville are nice? We wouldn't mind a 30 or 40 minute commute. My husband is a registered nurse and I'm a occupational therapy assistant, so an area that's close to a healthcare facility would be great.

Hi Sam Jane

You are lucky that you are both in healthcare - you might actually find jobs in Asheville

Many people want to live there, but it's mostly a tourist/retirement driven economy, so folks can't always find higher paying jobs.

Do you want to be in the city or out in the countryside?

Hi there!
I would really like to be in a small town area, that's within a 30 minute drive to a decent sized city. Any thoughts on nice areas would be great

Well, Asheville itself is the only "decent sized city" in all of western NC, lol.

Two of my favorite areas within easy access of Asheville are Black Mountain (east of Asheville) and Mars Hill (north of Asheville). They are both very quaint little towns with small colleges, which add a nice touch to a town

Start by looking for jobs at the hospital in Asheville, Mission St. Joseph.

Mission Health System - Asheville, North Carolina (NC) Hospitals

Then do some research on Mars Hill and Black Mountain, I think you'll like what you find!

Mars Hill and Black Mountain are good recommendations to be sure, but I think you were right in looking at Waynesville. It's a fantastic town, and the outdoors is right at your backdoor. Also, there are a few medical facilities in the area, such as the Smoky Mountain Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Waynesville and Western Regional Healthcare in Sylva. Personally, I think that area of WNC is the most beautiful of all; the mountains are sky-high, and the whole landscape is very very mountainous. If you are looking to live "in the mountains", Waynesville and the surrounding area is the spot to be around here. I am personally looking to move to Waynesville in about a year, so I may be slightly biased, but I chose it for a reason. It's halfway between Western Carolina University, which is where I will be completing a degree I'm working on, and Asheville, so I can go visit my Asheville friends without driving too far. It's about a 30-40 minute drive from Waynesville to Asheville, and the drive is gorgeous, so it never gets old to me.

Hendersonville is the largest city in Henderson County, and within a 30 min. drive to downtown Asheville. Two very good hospitals in the County. ParDee Hospital and Park Ridge Hospital.

Completely agree with you about Waynesville!

I forgot she asked about it above, so I'm glad you gave her the 411

glad there is thread on relocating to Asheville and looking for healthcare jobs. I am anOccupational therapist and my spouse is a Podiatrist. We are looking to become a productive part of the WNC area, but are SO concerned about finding income. We are not looking to becoming UNDER employed. Any thoughts on job market in above stated areas appreciated.

Brevard is really nice but not sure how long the exact commute to Asheville would be. There are lots of Retirees in Brevard to Highlands and I imagine plenty of need for healthcare workers.
