SF,
Actually, I'm thinking almost adjacent to the lake, just a block to the east, there's a little bitty circle, all the streets are called Laurel, and some Park Lane, too, and gosh are those homes nice, big old two stories. Now, north of there are some good houses, too, somewhat modern, off Mountain Street along View and Pine.
If you'll pull up an online map and switch on the button for satellite, let the trees be your guide, because downtown it's all cement and less trees, but just north of there closer to the lake, it's solid trees. The thing is, good houses in this area I'm focused on don't come up too much. So, I'm just saying, when you visit, and you got you some houses that are for sale you want to drive by, you may find a block or two near town might not be as appealing, but homes slightly east of the lake and perhaps a few blocks north of that circle area are just kinda neat to me.
Seems like there's some newly built Craftsman type houses somewhere in Blk Mt now, I think on the other side of the freeway from town, that you might like. It's really all a matter of how neighborhoods feel to you. I can't really say one is better than another. I just hated to see you focus too much on being "downtown." And actually, that Cotton Street is a pretty good ways from town, but nice area. To me, Blk Mt is so small, that downtown is just a few blocks, and near downtown is just a few blocks, and after that, it becomes neighborhoods. I hope that explains it better!

Thanks, that helps. By "downtown" I was meaning all those streets with the older houses in the same general area you're talking about. I guess I was using that term more to say we want to be in town as opposed to in a development that's a 15-minute drive to town. Ideally we'd like to be able to walk to restaurants, the library, etc., but we don't have to be right on top of the retail area to do so--like you say, it's pretty small, and we don't mind walking a half mile or mile. Anyway, we're going back this week--wish us luck!
SF,
Oh, I can hardly wait to hear about your adventures! I understand now what you mean by downtown. Yes, I daydream of one day living within walking distance of everything, so Blk Mt will suit you very well, such nice neighborhoods so close to town and with the lake, too!

I wish you the best of luck with your visit. I'm confident that you'll be able to find a house in Black Mountain that will be just what you want and that you'll really enjoying living there...
Any updates here? We're heading to Blk Mtn in a few weeks to see if it's somewhere we'd like to relocate from Cincinnati. I've enjoyed reading all the posts here and would like to know what happened now that more than a year has passed since the last post!

Hey, the area around Lake Tomahawk is just wonderful and they have a pool and golf course
right there. I am very familar with the area, and black mountain is one of my favorite places.
If you are interested in townhomes, they have some great ones w/mtn views in Swannanoa
in Craggy View which is about 10 minutes from downtown Black Mtn...
