Hello,

Looking for suggestions where to buy building materials, and block and brick in Black Mtn/Asheville area. Is Lowes the best bet for basic stuff? What about cement and block for footers and foundation? Cason's the best bet for brick? Hensons, are they high priced? I heard they have better quality lumber.

Thanks!

There are plenty of places around Asheville and Swannanoa. Find out where the contractors go. Many actually go to Lowe's and Home Depot; but there are many private places. There is also Lumber Liquidators in Arden off Rt 280. A couple of good ones in Hendersonville also.

Edit: It is also good to support the local smaller businesses ... or we will only be left with the big box stores. Something to think about.

I work closely with a contractor in Asheville and they go to Lowes and Home Depot for a lot of their materials. We're also building our own house and have bought most of our cement blocks from Lowes. However, I think we would have gone to Home Depot if it was more convenient. We did check prices at other suppliers and found that they couldn't come close to the price at Lowes and Home Depot... even the company that supplied them to Lowes couldn't sell them as cheaply (go figure). Anyway... also talk to one of the representatives at the pro desk and see about getting a discount. I know that at Lowes if you give them a list of $2,000 or more worth of supplies that you are wanting to buy, they can send it through a commity and give you a discount. We got almost 40% off of our insulation!!!

Thank you all. I only just got your replies and you are all right. We are almost done building now so I can start to answer some of these questions myself :-)
