We're road tripping from Minnesota to Wilmington later this month and going through Asheville. What's the best route from Asheville to Wilmington? I-40, Charlotte/74, or the southern route through Columbia, SC?

Thanks for your help!!

I40, but depends on how fast you want to get there. Expressway all the way - maybe 6-7 hours - but depends on traffic around Raleigh - hence "time of day" - and if there are accidents. Have fun!

I go down 26 (east) hope off on I20 near Columbia and head east then Hop on I95 north (near Florence) for a short period of time until I get off on 74 east near Lumberton then it's a straight shot. It takes me (from the H'ville area) about 6 hours.

I-40 from Asheville to Wilmington is actually the longest distance, despite being the same highway. Driving through Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Raleigh can quickly become a headache.

U.S. 74 is the shortest distance, but is not entirely freeway. Plenty of traffic signals in Shelby, Monroe and Wadesboro. This would be the best route if traveling at night. I've heard that it's better than it used to be. Despite the traffic signals, you're cutting off a lot of miles. The Monroe Bypass toll road should begin construction sometime soon (after environmental lawsuits), and the Shelby bypass is still scheduled to begin right-of-way acquisition next year.

I-26 to I-20 in Columbia, then I-95 to I/U.S. 74 to Wilmington seems to be the preferred route, and has my vote until there are more improvements along U.S. 74.

You'd think we'd have more than one freeway across this state by now.

The quickest way is as follows. It is almost 100% interstate highway

I-26 to I-20 near Columbia to I-95 near Florence to US-74 near Lumberton. Take US-74 all the way into Wilmington.

This route is the quickest, however about 30 miles further than the aforementioned I-40 to US-321 to US-74 route. Going this route, you will run into a lot more traffic and small towns/traffic lights.
