My wife and I are strongly considering leaving overpriced San Diego for Asheville, we are liberal types that should fit in well, both in our late 30's. We both have college degrees and will be looking for work in management in either the banking or health care field. No kids and one pitbull. Any feedback on housing, job scene, etc.. will be greatly appreciated.

The major problem is the same one that hits everyone thinking of moving to Asheville: the job scene is horrid. Health care field might work out, although you'd probably be in a stronger position if you were a provider and not in management. All I know about the banking sector here is from acquaintances in the field, some of whom are leaving the area because of the job situation.

Health care and tourism are the cash crops here. That's true whether the overall economy is good, bad or sideways. My recommendation is to focus on finding jobs here before all else. Not much is doable without checking that box.

Don't come without a job. Housing may seem like a deal compared to CA, but Asheville is one of the most expensive places to live in the country when the average household income is factored into the formula.
