Kids just came running in and told us how one of my chickens had a run in with a snake. Chicken seems fine. Not even sure if the snake got a bite in or not. Anyway, tried getting making an identification myself, but figured someone here might be able to help. Here are a couple of pics...

Garter snake. The chickens are safe though a big garter snake might eat some eggs. I killed a timber rattler in my front yard Sunday.

I agree on LAMusicGuy's ID...
Brown snake, very common in NC...it eats slugs and small stuff in garden.
A good creature. Won't hurt your chickens or, your kids.

Very harmless. Keeps the rodents down.

GOOD snake (and this is from someone who is not a fan of most reptiles).

The chicken was in no danger, but the snake might have been.

Default Oh my god!!!!

That is the killer brown snake. Do not be fooled. The snake bite causes you to think everything is ok. Thing is about the bite. You tell everyone else that the snake will not harm you. Then one night when you think all is well. You become the home of thousands.
