Kathy Mathews, associated professor of biology at Western Carolina University, predicts vibrant fall colors in western North Carolina, which could attract more tourists to the region. Drier conditions earlier this year and a cooler August could combine to produce strong leaf colors, she says.

I think rain figures in somehow too, which we've had some for sure, but I don't know which way it affects the leaves. Oh, I would love to see one of the showy seasons, they are unforgettable. And while the Parkway is always crowded during leaf season, locals really fill it up when it looks like it's gonna be a good one, us included.
