If he had stayed in the house he would have been fine. If the bear was breaking in then shooting would have been justified. But knowing there was a bear in the neighborhood people should have taken down bird feeders, trash not left out. No food no bear. Stupidity on both sides and ultimately bear was the loser.

I am not sure where you are getting that the bears are starving to death? Like I have mentioned the food is there, but given a choice a bear will always go for junk food/trash because it is much higher in fat content and calories. (and less work) Berries and fruit trees did great this year.
Here is an article from today's Hendersonville newspaper. Momma bear and two cubs up in a tree near the high school (downtown Hendersonville). Good nature lesson for some of the kids, they loved the excitement, but the principal wasn't jumping for joy. The bears have moved on ... to where? Fruit and nuts on sale at The Fresh Market.

There have been several articles about the higher-than-usual number of bears in neighborhoods this year, and all of them have cited a poor crop of acorns at higher elevations. I don't think it's actually less work to get at junk in people's yards, because bears don't typically want to interact with humans. As we saw this week, that can often end badly.
I have to go with the shooter on this one. Bear on his property? Check. Got kids? Check. Bear standing its ground and getting aggressive? Check. Got gun? Check. Bear showing signs of further aggression? Bam! I would have done the same thing. My family comes first.
As far as people taunting the guy, well, the lady out in CA who got mauled by a bear on her own property a couple of years back was widely taunted on the internet anyway, hounded by the press while in horrible pain and had to have major facial reconstructive surgery (although she did live to write a book about the experience). I'd take the taunts and be happy to have my body intact. Maybe the bears need to be made a little more cautious and give the neighborhoods a wider berth.
The shooter has to pay up to a $2000 fine and up to another $2K for replacement fee because he killed a bear when the bear wasn't threatening anyone's life. Maybe he -felt- scared and threatened just because the bear was there, but apparently it was unjustified. At least it was a clean shot & the bear didn't suffer too much. Sad stuff.
