I am considering a job in north georgia (Blairsville) and am trying to figure where to live. Murphy NC would be only 30 minutes to the job. But, I am an older person (54 years old), divorced female. I want to be in the mountains and in a place where people are active in outdoors, and good for one to start over in life. I will need to rent a home for a while before I make things permanent. Would Murphy be a good place? Other suggestions? Thanks, birminghamiantorelocate

my opinion only

maybe just find a place based upon your work looking as far out - distancewise- as you feel comfortable.

Murphy would not be a place I would choose as a single retiree myself, but that is just my opinion. Nice place to visit though.

Also remember that if you are traveling to work during the winter months the roads can get dicey due to steep winding two lane roads. I wouldn't choose to be too far from work.

Waynesville could be more attractive to you; very active small town, outdoorsy, fabulous views from just about anywhere in Waynesville which is in Haywood County. Plus you would only be about 25 miles west or so from Asheville proper. I usually tell people to draw a 20 to 25 mile radius around downtown Asheville to get a perspective of active yet not high population towns in this area. If you want to be active and have arts and culture, entertainment, and social groups according to your interests, don't isolate yourself. Around here you can be simply 7 or 8 miles outside of a small city and be nicely situated in a country atmosphere.

Also check Hendersonville, Mills River, Laurel Park, Fletcher, Etowah (Henderson County). Brevard is a quaint small town next door to Hendersonville, etc. Weaverville a bit north of Avl. , Black Mountain, Swannanoa, all lovely and the type of atmosphere I believe you are looking for, are east of Asheville.

Keep us posted ! and best to you.

If you are moving to North GA for a new job, I would stick close to that area. Asheville area and surroundings are a bit far away, but would be great to visit once you are settled!!

Disregard my previous descriptive post of areas near Asheville (too late for me to delete it) ... I thought you were MOVING FROM Blairsville. In that case, I doubt you would want to work IN Blairsville and live in Western NC. The mountain roads would be daunting. Sorry. But maybe we gave you food for thought ... jobs here are not plentiful, but the area certainly is more active for the lifestyle you describe.

One note to consider. By living in NC and working in GA your state taxes will be taken out and paid to GA but you will have to file a NC tax return and go through the motions of getting a credit for the taxes paid to GA. Makes things more complicated at tax time, because of the differing rates. GA max tax is 6% and NC max is 7.5 so you will have to have extra deducted from your paycheck to cover the difference, or make sure to have enough in the bank to cover any difference (but watch out for penalties for under-withholding).

Trust me, I speak from experience. You may want to consult a professional tax preparer to get the whole of it.

But this issue disappears in 2014, no?
