Looking to retire & relocate in a few yeras and it appears that Asheville is our most desired area.
We would like to buy a single family home, the wife must have mountain views and I would prefer being close to the downtown area. Weaverville was one recommendation and I wold assume there are other communities thta might be closer to the main town for shopping and places to eat. We are expecting to spend about $250 to 275 for a decent house in a nice community.

Hi, I am in the process of moving to Asheville. I have narrowed my search to West Asheville, Weaverville, and Black Mountain. I will look for your post and relay any information that I come across.
Good luck!

Sounds good! I heard good things about Blcak Mountain & Weaverville but hope it is not to remote since I do want to be close to all thta Asheville has to offer. Thanks..)
We need to spend about 4 days just searching out different neighborhoods so we know where to focus. I am thinking it will be a little difficult since the wife wants mountain views from the house, so that alone really narrows down the possibilities.
'Mountain views' are elusive and everyone has a different opin of what a 'mountain view' is, and what they want/will accept, imo.
4 days min, imo...and you may need to make a few more trips unless you are lucky or find the right 'area', let alone the right house. We made dozen plus trips in 2000, looking for land/houses.
Mtn Views can be had from lower elevations looking 'up', or middle to higher elevations, too. I suspect you aren't looking for higher than ~3000-3500.
At this time of year, the 'views' will be prime, as all the deciduous trees are bare; those winter views often disappear in Spring, Summer and Fall, fwiw.
Great board here with very knowledgeable and well placed opinionated posters, so fire away.
That 'few years' is a qualifier however; prices are not going down anytime soon, imo. And, that budget is on the very low side, but not a RE expert.

Rickcin,
Here is our view, but one won't find many like it regardless of price, imo...
'Stitched' Pano shot from our deck on ridge of Eagles Nest Mtn, above Waynesville, NC at ~5,000 ft elevation.
Along with what MD said above (what a view he has!), one must remember that the higher up the mountain you go, the longer it takes to get down the winding roads and into town. There are always pluses and minuses to consider.

MD, you have some beautiful view!!!, can you adopt me? Lol
motordavid,
That view is just spectacular and I do recall a few others that you have posted in the past, it is just spectacular. We are from the general area in NY where you resided prior to relocating NC. The wife is primarily focus on the view while I am more concerned to be in a good neighborhood and being relativly close to the main town and amenities, perhaps a 15 to 20 minute drive.
Your place is literally an eagles nest!
