I am considering purchasing a commercial building in downtown Asheville. I was hoping to get some ideas as to what type of business would go over well there. One idea that I have is renting to a buddy who wants to open a New York style deli. Thanks to all with any suggestions!
How many square feet? Good foot traffic? Parking nearby? Does it already have a kitchen?
2500 sq ft for the main floor with an additional 2500 sq ft for storage in the basement. Excellent foot traffic. Street parking and a number of public garages. No kitchen. In its previous life it was a clothing store.
I think a ShopHouse would do well in Asheville. It was started by Chipotle founder Steve Ells. ShopHouse brings the uniqueness of Chipotle in an Asian flavor. One of the good things is you'd have the cult-like following waiting on it (like Trader Joe's) once it was announced. As long as you could keep consistent with the fresh and local theme it would be an easy sell IMO.

Anyways, good luck!
BigJon, thanks for the response! I would like to avoid chain style restaurants. I would like to have a local flavor with a unique theme.
Something similar to what Farm Burger has done.
I agree that anything chain-like would not go over well in the downtown area. (Isn't Farm Burger a chain? I know they exist in a couple other towns at least). There are so many good restaurants downtown that I think anything would be difficult, but if it's a real New York style deli (with good pastrami and real bagels), I know my husband would be your first customer! Also, if the food is priced right it may do well. I often hear downtown workers complain that there's no affordable lunch nearby. Good luck!
