Hey all. My family and I (including our 18 month old daughter) are desperately searching for a rental. We were hoping to stay in Buncombe county, but since it seems NOONE accepts dogs on a restricted list, we are having to expand our search. We have an elderly American Staffordshire, and because of her age and the fact she only has a few years left, and she is a loving and loyal member of our family, giving her up is absolutely not an option. Does anyone know of areas out here that do not have such strict breed restrictions? I am going to be attending Nursing school in the fall of next year and so moving too far away (as in back to SLC where we moved from) is just not an option until I finish school. ANY and ALL assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks. I've been searching Craigslist a ridiculous amount of times a day and have yet to find a single place that will allow "restricted" breeds. So on I search...
You may need to make contacts with people that work with or are dog friendly with "restricted breeds," such as dog rescues for that breed or animal rescue organizations, such as Brother Wolf. If there are organizations in this area that care for and rescue these breeds, they may be more inclined to help you find a place to rent with your dog. They may have a bulletin board or Facebook page you could join to make connections. Given the restrictions in the general public you are meeting, you're going to have do some "networking" among similarly focused people. I would put more effort elsewhere than hoping the right ad will show up on CL. Good luck.
If you scroll down, it will tell you the restricted breeds for various pet-friendly rental agencies. Unfortunately, most unrestricted rentals put the max dog weight at 50 lbs.
We had to be deceptive about our pit to find the rental we had in the past. He was a puppy when we moved in, so he was under the weight limit. He grew to 70 lbs, but the agency never checked again. Not nice of us, I know, but we had to live somewhere and he has never destroyed a single thing in his life, to this day.

Are you looking strictly at apartment rentals, or single family homes? You may have more luck with a single family home in the country where you could put up a pen or fenced area, not a home in a highly populated neighborhood.
A 6-year old little boy in Henderson County (Mountain Home area) was killed two weeks ago by a rescued pit bull that the owner only had for 2 weeks. I know, it's a different situation -- as a result, however, the Asheville Humane Society has put a moratorium on taking pit bulls. It is a misunderstood breed; but a majority of pit owners have them for the wrong reason. Best of luck.

You shoulda known better than to have an "assault dog"!
Dont you know those are dangerous just like "assault weapons"?
Haha, just messing with yah.
But the data does not lie, those dogs are dangerous and that perception of them will not change. Best of luck.
Post an ad on Craigslist, explain the situation and eventually somebody out there will respond...
I used to have a Doberman, so I feel your pain. She was the sweetest, most gentle and docile dog in the entire world, but unfortunately she had that "vicious breed" stigma. And more than once I saw grown men recoil in horror at the sight of her - yet children loved her everywhere we went, so go figure.
But I own rental property (not in NC though) and my very first set of renters was a young couple with a Rottweiler who did what I'm suggesting. They posted an ad, I saw it, their rental history and references were good, and they stayed with me for a full year. They paid the rent on time every month, and there was never ever any issues with their dog.
I wish you luck. You or anyone, not fully disclosing the facts about your dog puts you at extreme liability. Loosing your apartment will be the least of your troubles.
Maybe look a little farther out, a bit more rural. Good luck.
