I bought a condo in Blowing Rock, NC which I absolutely LOVE!! The area is a wonderful vacation spot, but I am looking to move to NC from Long Island, NY and all the homes seem to be hanging off cliffs and I would like to be more in the foothills, so that I can look at the mountains in the close distance, have some property (maybe an acre) and close to a cozy town. I was looking into the Hickory/Lenoir area, but the topography seems a little nicer further south and west like around Shelby/Rutherfordton? Can anyone help me out with this?

The Rutherfordton/Lake Lure area would be nice. You'd only be about 30-40 miles from Asheville.

thanks FriendNC, it does seem nice in that area. I started checking out realtor.com to see what is available real estate wise. We have been so anxious to move. We have been looking for the past two years and still haven't taken the perverbial "leap". I started reading this forum and got very disappointed with all the negative feedback there is about moving there. My husband and I are looking to take a step back from our fast pace here on Long Island, NY and assimilate to the cultures in the South. We enjoy seeing all the God Loves You Signs everywhere...you won't see that here. We don't want to change anything.....so we are hoping that as long as we are friendly, we will be accepted....am I wrong??

What was some of the negative feedback? Maybe I could help out. I will assure you, I'll be totally honest. I live in the Charlotte area and have all of my life. NC in general, as I'm sure you would find when moving here, is one of the most welcoming, friendly areas of the nation. People of all backgrounds and views get along really well here. One cardinal sin would be to say(and quite a few newcommers make this mistake), "well, we do it this way in NY, CA, FL" or wherever the person is from. It's considered VERY disrepectful here. But I think it would be disrespectful to say that anywhere, you know? So, yes, you would be more than welcome in the way you were discribing. If you have any specific questions or concerns, just pm me or post, and I'd be more than happy to assist in any way.
