You have to be picky. You don't want to buy something and feel like you settled.

So are there certain neighborhoods that are working class families are found or do lower income families end up in apartments or living more rural?

This site has a wealth of information on it. For example, you can look at a map of Asheville showing the median household income by census block groups:

https://www.city-data.com/city/Ashevi...#mapOSM?mapOSM[zl]=13&mapOSM[c1]=35.56937678403363&mapOSM[c2]=-82.54096984863281&mapOSM[s]=income3&mapOSM[fs]=false

Easy enough to see where whatever income level you're interested in lives.

Thanks for the map link I hadn't looked at it in detail before.... another post provided a link that gets to some of what I'm trying to figure out.... this really is a problem is a family making 77K needs assistance in finding affordable housing.

"These jobs provide a wage that does not qualify workers as low income, but renders it difficult to obtain adequate housing in the Asheville/Buncombe market. The population identified as the “workforce” in need of assistance are those families with an income between $44,300 and $77,560"

Edneyville and Fletcher seem to be cities in the area that are slightly more affordable.

There are trailer parks all over this area. Even some of those two room shacks with the tin roofs going out by Bat Cave.

Realistically you're probably going to have a long search for anything nice under $300,000.

"Can low-middle income families (teachers, police officers, public employees) afford to live in Asheville?"

Not really. The city is supposedly working on getting teachers vouchers for affordable housing. Then again it is one of the lowest paying states for already underpaid teachers.
