So we just arrived today and drove through Asheville and some surrounding areas. I didn't expect it to be so crowded with cars on every road. It kind of felt like Long Island to me. I don't really get that small town feel. are there any towns outside Asheville with a small town feel? Stores are packed everywhere!! What are some nice smaller towns in western nc We liked the complex in Arden.

I went through the same shock when moving here last year. One doesn't realize just how much tourism impacts Asheville until actually experiencing it. And if you want to go hiking on the trails around the area, get ready for the trail version of Grand Central Station. I thought the idea of tourists would be kind of nice, keeping things fresh and all, but the reality of it, especially as much as this area gets, is quite different. I took one of our dogs to Dupont today, wanted to go to Hooker Falls/ Triple Falls, well, I would have had to park way in the back of the lot because there were so many cars there. So we went to a different part of Dupont that doesn't have water falls, but at least the trail was peaceful, and we only came across a bow hunter. (To those walking dogs on trails, be aware that hunting season has begun. Put a red or orange kerchief or vest on your dog!) Tourism in this area is intense and makes things feel crowded and busy in many areas in all but the dead of winter. Welcome to WNC!
Check out Linville falls, take 221 (very beautiful and rural) to Old Hampton store , visit Linville Falls winery stay in a beautiful little cabin on the river, visit Grandfather Mt, Linville Gorge and downtown Banner Elk. Have fun!!!!
We are looking for somewhere to live also. I wanted to escape the crowds. I get enough of that on Long Island. any suggestions of nice towns to live that are not so crowded?
I rec'd some reading via the Search This Forum Tab on this board: there are pages of recent threads similar to your wonderments to be found and read.
RE: ..."any suggestions of nice towns to live that are not so crowded?"
Western NC has several: some listed above, and then there are towns not next door to Asheville, but west of Asheville, 15- 45 mins:
Candler, Canton, Waynesville, Dillsboro, Sylva, et al.
Not sure what you mean by 'complexes'...many of the towns have one or a few apt complexes.
If Asheville reminds you of LI, it must be a different LI than I recall from living just outside NYC for 3 decades.
