I'm 58, female, entirely alone with my dogs. I am a former CEO and a massive white collar crime victim. All of my assets were stolen. I am surviving on Social Security Disability. I have a $400k - $500k condo in NJ to sell. I want to heal in a newer (so as not to take on repairs) 2000+ square foot home with some charm and a minimium of one acre so as to avoid dog-hating neighbors. I envision it smelling of home made soup as I surround myself with fleece and flannel and do some writing. My needs are simple: a good supermarket, competent veterinarian and decent library. It seems that southwestern NC offers the best value? I have looked carefully at Pennsylvania but it appears to be too expensive? Can anyone suggest the best places for me to consider? Will a non-practicing Jewish woman survive in the area? Thank you much....

FAIRVIEW, NC has some new homes in a new community I think is perfect for you and will keep money in the bank.

Fairview is one of the growth areas of Buncombe County, partly because it seems everyone wants to move here, and the completion of widening US 74 to 4 lanes so you can actually get there. That does not equal inexpensive.

Default Move to Asheville

I moved to Asheville from New Jersey 29 years ago and have never regretted it. I too am a nonpracticing Jewish woman, have been married twice. Have 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren. There are many beautiful new condos here, but I don't know if that will suit you. I have MS and am living on SS Disability also. My first husband managed to steal my children's assets and start a business in Oregon. It sounds like we have many similarities. I don't come across too happy, but I really am content and really do love Asheville. I was born here 62 years ago and am one of the few natives left. Let me know if there is anything you would like to know or if you would like me to get you in touch with a realtor, I would be more than happy to help. My name is Joyce and my email is joycerosie@charter.net. Good luck to you. Joyce

Default Hendersonville is small and friendly

HI,
I am in somewhat a similar situation only I got mugged by a employer when I got hurt on the job. I too am on SSDI and I find it difficuolt financially tight, but I am looking into selling the mobile home that I bought here before I moved and look for a small apt where I may get a deal on rent because of the SSDI. You should have no problem finding a place in your price range as from what I have seen just about any price range is represented here.

I spin wool and am starting to weave, but I buy my wool from strangers..if you move to the country and get some woolies I might buy from you! Wool's a big cottage industry around here!

If I can answer any questions just let me know...oh, there are great DR's and hospitals here.I have a couple of health issues that require specialists and I found great dr's here. I was worried about that as I am on a lot of meds and that could have been a big problem, but I loved the first general practioner that I got in to see..he is a sweetheart and now I wouldn't trade him for my old DR!! Good luck ..and no question is too dumb..except the ones you don't asl! jenna

Thank you, Joyce. I am sorry for your plight.

I most assuredly will never consider a condo again as that is what I am racing to leave. I very much need a private house with sufficient property to have privacy. I would like to stay below $200k but need some degree of charm and a nurturing sort of space.

Thank you so much.

Default This is a wonderful healing place

Tapshoe,

I hope you find all that you are searching for here in Western NC. Beauty is everywhere you look for it. I really enjoyed your "vision" of the house with certain food aromas in it. When I was looking to move here, I felt the same way... and my other favorite thought/wish was to be able to sit on my deck or in my yard on a summer morning to quietly drink coffee and observe the birds and mountains waking up as the sun's rays grow warmer.

Best this is - I found both of those memories, and live them now. Best wishes and good fortune to you. I hope that the mountain air can help to wash away memories of bad times, and begin to refresh your spirit.
