Pretty easy and pretty safe. 19E for a short drive onto I-40 to Marion, NC, then NC Hwy 321 into Boone. The most challenging part is the traffic through Hickory and into Blowing Rock depending upon the time of day.
Im in my mid-70s and it doesn't rate in the top 20 of challenging drives in WNC.

Probably has more to do with how safe is the 80 year old driving than the roads .

getatag missed the directions a bit even mentioning marion and 221 and hickory together !!

Airport to I-26 to I-40 east the continue on to Morganton . Take state hiway 64 to lenoir but watch out in down town morganton or you'll have to back track a few blocks . 64 to Lenoir is where you will get on 321 to boone . Good roads for most people. My route is 13 miles longer than get a tags getting on 221 in marion but easier on the driver . Might be helpfull if you have GPS on your phone , just in case .
