Hi group, I have a friend interested in moving to the area and they were asking me about the availability of jobs in the banking industry in Asheville, which I know practically nothing about. I know the overall job market here is pretty tough here, outside of tourism and healthcare, but wondering what the odds are of a highly experienced/talented loan specialist landing a job in the banking industry here in AVL. TIA for any input.
p.s. my suggestion was Charlotte, but he's got his heart set on AVL.
Asheville has branch banking, and the major lenders have a presence there - but people who work in the branches tend not to be specialists, but familiar with all of the products a customer might need.
Charlotte is a banking center with the headquarters of Bank of America and Truist. Plus Wells Fargo remains a large operations center. And only about 2 hours for visits to Asheville.
I can't even say that I consider Asheville to be a convenient distance from central Gaston county. Google maps says 106 miles, and figuring in a little time to refuel, grab a coffee, visit a restroom along the way, I view it as a 2 hour trip just from here.
If someone moves to Charlotte for the ability to "move up the ladder" in a big financial corp, or moves there for the ability to job hop between corps, that makes sense.
But life will typically revolve around what is within an hour of Charlotte. Asheville is a weekend trip, to really enjoy visiting and not feel rushed or tired when returning home.
A strong MLO with references should have no problems finding a job with the real estate market the way it is.
